After 31 years of making dreams come true, Challenged America , a charitable learn-to-sail program, is inviting the public to an open house on Sunday, March 1, at its new location on Shelter Island. The organization has helped thousands of disabled children and adults take to the water since its inception in 1978 by two San Diego disabled veterans. Everyone else is cutting back and here we are expanding and hiring and moving forward, said Urban Miyares, co-founder of Challenged America
The public took advantage of the first annual Big Bay Whale Days festival this past weekend on the Embarcadero, with thousands visiting the event and many taking part in one of the sold-out excursions. Hornblower Cruises and San Diego Harbor Excursion offered attendees free cruises for children with purchase of adult tickets while the USS Midway had free admissions for children with adult purchase. Calling all boat lovers. For the first time ever, the Kona Kai Resort will be the host of a new event for boaters who love long-distance cruising and trawler yachts. Trawler Fest docks into Shelter Island from Feb. 26-28. The event will feature 30 to 40 exhibitors as well as informative seminars, tips and techniques from other cruisers, and 25 to 40 yachts on display at the K Dock.
